Understanding Poverty, Economic Security, Work Supports and the Needs of Young Children and their Families

This session will provide information about what it costs to raise a family in Rhode Island – using the Economic Progress Institute’s Standard of Need—and how federal measures of “poverty” are an insufficient measure of family economic well-being. It will also include an overview of federal and state policies that help families make ends meet, including food assistance, child care assistance, housing subsidies and the Earned Income Tax Credit. We will discuss policy solutions to promoting economic security, including current advocacy efforts in Rhode Island relating to (i) the infant/child care workforce and (ii) improving economic security for families.
