Session 2: March 25, 2019 - Elda Dawber

LGBTQ: Helping Parents Understand and Support Gender Identity and Gender Expression in Their Children

Key to providing competent medical and social services to families who may at some point find themselves raising an LGBTQ youth is knowledge of a family’s issues and needs as it experiences a child who challenges the male/female binary and explores gender fluidity – often at a very young age. These youngsters must negotiate gender identity and gender expression issues internally, as well as within their own families, schools, and faith communities (among many others). Research has shown poor physical and mental health outcomes in youngsters whose families do not understand and/or support them. This brief lecture and then discussion will focus on providing terminology, resources, research, and information relevant to helping professionals.
