Session #3April 25, 2023Session Title: Strengths-Based IECMH Assessment and Diagnosis
Featured Speakers:Aditi Subramaniam and Jayne Singer
Description: Community Conversation Series Session #3 centers on defining and contextualizing strength-based IECMH assessment and diagnosis. It includes a brief introduction to the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0-5), a framework that guides developmentally-appropriate, family-focused, and culturally-responsive understanding of early social-emotional, behavioral, and/or regulatory challenges. This framework is based on the empirical foundation that young children’s mental health and wellbeing develops in the context of primary caregiving relationships. Thus, all observations, assessments, conceptualizations, and recommendations are made with families through the lens of relationships. Beyond assessment and diagnosis, we discuss how this framework might be used by allied professionals to engage with families and identify relational strengths.
